Detroit Pistons' Ben Wallace Will Retire After Current NBA Season - BallerStatus.com

Ben WallaceAlthough Jeremy Lin has made the most noise in the NBA over the past two weeks, Ben Wallace made headlines Monday (February 13), when he revealed that this will be his last season.

Both players have something in common too -- they both entered the NBA undrafted.? While Lin has got off to best scoring start (109 points) to a career of any player, Wallace is set to etch his own mark into the league's history books ...? breaking the record for most games played by an undrafted player since the 1976-77 NBA-ABA merger.

He's currently tied with Avery Johnson, but will surpass the mark if he plays his 1,055th game Tuesday night (February 14) against San Antonio.

However, after adding more games to the record throughout the rest of the season, Wallace says he'll close the curtain on his career ... without a doubt, and will not come back.

"No consideration to coming back," he said. "This is definitely my last year."

ESPN says Wallace considered retiring after last season, but decided to come back for 2011-12, his 16th season in the NBA.

Wallace was a virtual unknown before earning his spot in the NBA with his tough defense and outstanding rebounding ability. He eventually won four Defensive Player of the Year awards and helped the Pistons win the 2004 championship.

He played for Washington in 1996, and for the following three seasons before heading to Orlando for one year, and then the Pistons ... where his career took off. The 2001-02 season with Detroit was his coming out party, leading the NBA in rebounds and blocks per game. He won his first of four Defensive Player of the Year awards that season, during in a five-season span. He was never a prolific scorer though.

This season, Wallace is averaging just over 14 minutes per game, and has scored 28 points in 28 games.

So, what does Wallace have planned after life in the NBA? He says he wants to spend time with his family and eventually wants to go to law school.

"That's definitely on the radar," Wallace said. "I'm going to take a little time, get away from basketball, clear my head and jump back into school."
