Raymond Felton is having the worst season of his seven year NBA career. For the first time, he is averaging single digit scoring (9.7 per game) and his assist production is the lowest it's been since 09-10 when he dished out only 5.6 per game. But what is really distressing is his shooting. Felton is 36.8% from the floor and 24% from behind the arc. He's never been a really great shooter; his career average is 41% FG and 32.6% three; but the career low percentages are disturbing.
Sometimes, all a player needs is a change of scenery, and if you haven't already dropped Felton (as most of us have), the news that the Lakers may seek to obtain Felton is good news. For most of us, it just means we're keeping an eye on the waiver wire and possibly considering an add if these rumors persist.
The reason is because Felton is still a very good player who hasn't been derailed by injuries. He's just having a bad season -- presumably. His career high scoring of 17.1 per game, posted in 54 games with the Knicks, during the 2010-11 season, before he was dealt to Denver, could be replicated given the proper situation.
I'm not at all suggesting he would post 17 a game playing along side Kobe Bryant, but such isn't impossible either. Realistically, I would say an upside of 15 points per game and 7 assists per game is within reach for Felton if he joins the Lakers.
The key improvement must come in the shooting, however, for any of this to be possible. Felton must start hitting his shots, especially since so many of them are now wide open ones with teams daring him to shoot. For a player whose strengths have typically involved spot up shooting, that is just unacceptable. He must be a threat from the outside, to remain in the NBA. He's only 27, but with limited athleticism to begin with will need to hit his jumpshots to remain at all effective on offense.
Felton is far from done yet, so let's just keep an eye on him and possibly add him in the up coming weeks as the trade deadline approaches. If he posted his typical value, it could make the difference in winning your league.
