Evan Turner denied a radio report that a mystery problem was causing his inconsistent play and then scored a career-best 26 points, helping the Philadelphia 76ers rout the Boston Celtics 103-71 last night.
Yesterday morning, retired Philadelphia Daily News columnist Stan Hochman said in a radio interview that there was “ an explanation for Turner’s inconsistent play. One of these days, the team, with Turner’s permission, will reveal it. And then the criticism will back off.”
Hochman went on to say that the information had been passed along to him with the understanding that he wouldn’t reveal what the problem is.
“I heard it through the grapevine,” Turner said. “I don’t really know what to say. I honestly don’t have any clue what’s being said or what’s going on. Everything is going fine for me. I don’t really have any problems, you know — not any problems worth arguing about compared to what normal people are going through, so everything is fine with me.”
Turner, the second overall pick in the 2010 draft out of Ohio State, shot 11 of 19 from the field and grabbed nine rebounds against Boston. He entered the game averaging 7.7 points per game.
The Sixers, helped by Turner’s 10 points, led 33-17 after one quarter.
Turner hit a jumper to cap a 14-0 run in the second quarter that gave the Sixers their biggest lead to that point, 49-21.
Kyrie Irving’s driving layup with four seconds left ended Cleveland’s six-game losing streak and gave the Cavaliers a 100-99 win over the Nuggets in Denver.
Irving had 18 points, with 10 coming in the final 2:36 — all on drives to the basket, including continuation fouls on two of the four plays.
The Nuggets had a shot to win at the buzzer when Ty Lawson beat Irving off the dribble, but his driving layup bounced off the rim as Irving jumped back into position to defend the shot.
Antawn Jamison had 33 points, including 26 in the first half, and nine rebounds for Cleveland. Irving added eight assists while making his fourth winning basket this season.
Al Harrington had 22 points off the bench to lead the Nuggets. Lawson scored 18.
Wizards 106, Lakers 101 — Kevin Seraphin scored 10 of his career-high 14 points in the fourth quarter to help Washington come back from a 21-point, third-quarter deficit.
Kobe Bryant scored 30 points for Los Angeles but hit just 9 of 31 shots, including 1 of 10 in the fourth quarter.
Nets 101, Clippers 100 — Jordan Farmar hit a three-pointer from the right wing with 0.2 seconds left and New Jersey beat Los Angeles despite squandering an 18-point, second-half lead.
Heat 89, Hawks 86 — LeBron James had 31 points and 11 rebounds, Dwyane Wade added 18 points and set up Udonis Haslem for a dunk with 12 seconds left, and Miami rallied to beat Atlanta.
Bulls 106, Bucks 104 — Derrick Rose hit the winning shot as time expired to lift Chicago to a season-high eighth straight win.
